Nanda Gajarawala - Contemporary Textile Artist
Embroidering mosquito nets allows me to manipulate traditional needlework techniques I mastered during my childhood in India into contemporary artworks. This process visually changes the context of net and thread from discrete fabrics into what appears as brushstrokes on canvas.

Birds are a common theme in my work, and serve as an exploration of my experiences and desires in life. To soar into the sky with no fear, float beside the clouds in peace, or come back and enjoy the sunset from our nests. These simple moments are what inspire me to create my paintings. I wish that the viewer can experience these mosquito net paintings in a way that represents their individual connection with their surroundings.
